Possible (Cheap) Group Break - Are You Interested? (Updated)

** Response has been good, but thanks to a reader I've listed a new option.  Please look at the choices if you have already commented.  I believe this new 4th option gives us even more bang for our buck and cards in our respective team's stack!!

If you are like me collecting anything can put a strain on your wallet, especially in times like these.  Most of us I'd imagine collect on a budget and we always want to get the most for our dollar.  I love opening boxes and packs of just about any year / product, but it isn't always possible on my shrinking budget.  I love getting cards of players from my favorite team (the Braves if you couldn't guess!), but it's not worth buying them individually on eBay when sellers are charging up to $3 shipping for one card!  I like the cheap stuff - or junk wax as some call it.  I never had a chance to open certain product growing up so here's my chance to have a little fun and hopefully spread the joy to others collectors without taking too much from your collecting budget.

In the past when I've hosted a group break I've gone after semi-high end product as well as boxes from the flagship brands like Topps & Upper Deck.  I've paid for these out of my pocket with the hopes to sell enough of the teams to at least break even.  Sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn't and I lost a little money.  I'm still new at this so it's all been a learning process.  This time around I wanted to go after product that 1) would be fun to open, 2) something that is new to me and most importantly 3) some that is price wise is rather cheap.  No, I'm not busting late 80's Donruss/Fleer/Topps!  My goal is to keep this cheap while giving teach team a chance at getting a lot of base cards.  I've priced out a few different scenarios and listed each below.  Please feel free to leave a comment and let me know and you'd be interested in participating and what package sounds like the better deal / most fun.  I'm not asking for payment until I can gauge the interest - so please only vote if you plan to participate.  Make sense?

Option 1)  1992 O-Pee-Chee Premier and 1994 Topps Stadium Club Series 2 & 3.  I know those sets don't exactly knock your socks off, but I like the design of 94 TSC and the O-Pee-Chee is the wild horse so to speak.  This would yield 84 packs in total.  Each team would cost $6.00 + shipping.

Option 2)  1998 Skybox Dugout Axcess & 1998 Fleer Sports Illustrated World Series Fever.  Yields 48 packs in total.  Dugout Axcess has some interesting inserts while the SI World Series Fever features a nice clean design and great photos.  Each team would cost $6.00 + shipping.

Option 3)   KILLED!

** NEW **
Option 4)  1993 Upper Deck Fun Pack, 1994 O-Pee-Chee, 1996 Topps Laser Series 2 Hobby & 2002 Topps Total Retail.  This would yield 144 packs!  Why these boxes?  Fun Pack b/c it's something different and some of us may have skipped over it when it was new since it was "gimmicky".  94 OPC b/c I like it.  96 Laser - I always liked the intricate cuts on the cards and the inserts look nice.  02 Total is all about the potential rookies (Bay, Mauer, Wright).  Each team would cost $7.00 + shipping.  I would need to sell at least 10 teams for this option to work.

If there is enough response then we'll go with whatever option has the most votes.  Please help spread the word of the group break if you have your own blog.  If all goes well I'd like to place the order for the boxes within a week or so and get started shortly after that.

  1. Sounds like fun. I would choose option 2 but any of them is cool with me. I would like to go for the Mets and Yankees if we are choosing teams now.

  3. I'm always interested in cheap group breaks, especially when you can pick your own team. Option 2 would be my preference, but I might be interested in Option 1 (would have to check to see what I have, though.)

  4. I need people to claim at least 10 teams to make this work so if you want multiple teams please let me know. As of now it appears we have 3 teams spoken for (Mets, Yankees & Cardinals).

  5. I'd be interested in option 2 only. Of course I'd want the Dodgers. But I'd be willing to take on another team. I don't want to steal anybody's team, so for now I'd say Red Sox or Blue Jays or Marlins. One of those.

  6. I'd say 2 as well. I'm sure BA Benny would beat me to the Mets, but I need to build up trade reserves for other teams, so I'd be pretty open.

  8. I'm in for the Orioles. I prefer Option #2. BTW, where are you ordering your boxes from? Baseball Card Exchange usually has the best selection of older boxes IMO. The prices are reasonable too.

  9. @ Ryan - thanks for the heads up on BB Exchange. They've got some GREAT prices. I wish I had known about them before I posted my options. I was looking at several dealers on eBay for the boxes.

  10. I will claim the Twins, but ONLY for Option #4. I'm pretty well set on the team cards from the other options, but the 2002 Total and 1996 Laser would be promising.
