Mail day surprise

Last weekend while I was away attending the big annual comic book convention in my home town of Charlotte I came home to a nice surprise waiting for me in the mailbox.  I haven't been able to devote much time in the last month to trades or anything of that sort so I was a little perplexed over this fat bubble mailer.

I'm pretty good w/ names and addresses so I looked in the upper left corner and saw a name that I haven't seen in awhile.  It was Dennis from Too Many Verlanders.  Did he know it was my birthday last week I thought?  Doubt it.  Upon opening the mailer there was a sticky note inside that basically said "Here, found you some cool cards at a recent show.  Enjoy!"

Man.  I've been doing this blog now for a little over 2 years and I'm still floored by the generosity of others.  There were 2 team bags and a few top loaders inside.  The first team bag had an assortment of young Braves players - most of which I didn't have.  The 2nd team bag had an assortment of older Carolina Panthers football cards - always a nice treat.  I didn't scan the card, but there was a cool Fleer Tradition "team" card and you could see QB Steve Beuerlein in the middle of the huddle.  Awesome.  Two cards that caught my eye in the stack were RCs of RB Jonathan Stewart.

   

The top loaders however held the real jewels.  Keeping w/ the Panthers I pulled out another Stewart...

I love these UD Masterpieces Captured on Canvas jersey cards.  The only card from this set I had was Matt Ryan (which I'd love someone to take off my hands) so I was thrilled w/ this card.

Next up were 3 more top loaders...this time baseball.  Who could it be?  What was in top loaders?

Who wouldn't be impressed w/ these cards?  Especially that sweet Javy Lopez.  I may have to keep Morgan from Silver Slugger at bay over this Javy card!

Check Out My COMC

I've often browsed Check Out My Cards site before, but never bought anything.  A few weeks (?) ago I was looking for something particular that I didn't find, but I did find a few really cheap ($.10 + $.15) cards of former Dodgers player Todd Hollandsworth that I didn't have.  I had heard shipping kinda sucked so I looked to see if I could find any other good cheap cards before deciding to place an order.

 

1995 Action Packed #66

We all remember the Action Packed brand, don't we?  For those of you that don't these cards featured rounded corners, thicker card stock and most noticeably embossed images on the card's front.  I had a bunch of mid 90's football cards from Action Packed thinking they were cutting edge at the time.  Now I look at them with a 'meh' feeling.

This particular one per pack insert set was popular at the time thanks to the inclusion of Alex Rodriguez.  Of all the packs I ripped in 1994 looking for the A-Rod card I don't think I ever came across the Hollandsworth card.

 
1995 Mother's Cookies #16

I had heard of these Mother's Cookies cards before, but had never seen one before I came across the listing.  Of all of the Hollandsworth cards I got in this order this is by far my favorite.

 
1995 Signature Rookies #4

And the ugliest card award goes to Signature Rookies!  I guess they thought that a limited print run of 10,000 was something special.  I must've only bought this card since it was a dime.

 
1994 Pacific Card-Supial #29

Jackpot!  I remember hearing about these cards and I thought it was a very clever idea.  Pacific always seemed to think outside of the box.  The idea behind these if you haven't figured from the name is the card has a pouch on the back side where you can collect the corresponding smaller card and place it inside the larger card...you know, like a kangaroo or koala bear.

These aren't quite mini cards...or at least not in the way we think of now when we hear the term mini card.  They are about the same size as the old Topps Micro and Donruss mini cards that were in Cracker Jacks in the early 90's if you remember those.

I couldn't believe I found both the larger and smaller cards for 3 of these...esp. 3 players that I collect.  This would be a fun set to build, but way too hard for me at this point.

Now that I know I can purchase cards @ COMC and leave them there until I have a lot to ship at once I may revisit them in the future to look for odd balls and other cards I need to fill in holes.  Thanks for reading.

Recent Acquisitions

Today's post will be a quick one.  I just wanted to share a few new cards that were sent my way over the last few weeks.

 2008 Tristar Signa Cuts Todd Hollandsworth #d 46/50

This was one of those purchases where if you leave it on your watchlist long enough it's bound to go on sale...and that's exactly what happened.  Not too bad for $2.99.  The signature just doesn't look like it reads Todd Hollandsworth.

2003 Fleer Splendid Splinters Gary Sheffield game-used bat #d 161/425

I was hoping to get a hit in Community Gum's current all Fleer group break, but I was shut out.  Thankfully this nice card of Sheffield was to be had for $.99.  Too bad the whole card isn't wood as that would have been really cool.

2003 Upper Deck MVP Darin Erstad Covering the Bases authentic base #CB-DE

Game-used jersey and bat cards are a dime a dozen, but I don't see near as many game-used base cards...especially cards with such a large piece of base as these Covering the Bases cards from MVP.  Sure Erstad may not have the star power as other players in this set, but at $.79 why not?  Anytime I can find a game-used base card for a decent price I won't overlook it.

Firsts for Tony Gwynn & Gary Sheffield Collections

I always have admired Tony Gwynn's plate discipline when he played the game, but it hasn't been long that I've been collecting his cardboard.  A few days ago I was researching something on eBay and I stumbled across a Fleer card of Gwynn that stood out.  There were a few days left and the bidding was rather low.  I had a few bucks left over in my PayPal account so I put in a bid.  I really thought I would be instantly outbid, but I wasn't.  Another day or so passes and I get the confirmation e-mail that I won the card!  Needless to say I was surprised...not only that I won but the ending price was less than 4 bucks.  Have no idea what the card books for...could care less.

I also ran across this 1/1 Black Printing Plate of Gary Sheffield from 2007 Upper Deck Elements for around $10.00.  I don't normally spend much on single cards, but I don't any 1/1 cards in my sports collections so it made it really hard to pass this up.  Plus I really like steel cards.
