Pack Break: 1989 Topps Nintendo Game Pack

In a recent retro video game purchase I made came one sealed pack of 1989 Topps Nintendo Game Pack cards. I've seen packs of these cards at throwback stores and at card shows, but I've never purchased a pack, yet alone opened one. I've been meaning to share the contents of this pack for some time, but just have been busy with work and such. However the time for procrastinating is over!

I haven't opened a vintage wax pack in some time! Just opening this brought me back to my beginnings with baseball cards. Alright, 5 cards total - 3 scratch offs and 2 stickers...with top secret tips!

It appears the scratch off cards are actually some type of game...fitting considering the overall Nintendo theme. Scratch off 3 bats and you lose, but if you can find 1 arrow plus either 2 kicks, 3 elbows or 4 punches and you win and advance. I guess there are multiple Double Dragon scratch off cards as it says Screen 4 of 10 underneath the game logo.

Super Mario Bros. 2 scratch off up next. Same premise as above. Scratch to reveal certain items to win the game and advance. This is Screen 3 of 10.

Wouldn't be a complete pack without something Zelda related. This game seems pretty forward. 3 swords and you win or 3 fireballs and you lose.

The stickers come with these hideous, yet cool all yellow backgrounds. Billy Lee here of Double Dragon fame. On the flip side is one of these Top Secret Tips the pack mentioned...however it's for Super Mario Bros. and not for Double Dragon?! Did you read the tip? That's not a Top Secret Tip! That is common sense!

The last card in the pack is a sticker card for Punch-Out!! I must have been the one kid growing up in the 80's that could have cared less for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Just never could get into the game. This card's tip is for the Legend of Zelda. At least this is something that not everyone may have known about when originally playing the game back in the day.

Overall this was a fun pack to open and now it's got me wondering how hard it'd be to find a sealed box of this stuff. Being that I'm a retro gamer and all it'd be fun to build this set. What do you think about these cards? Have you seen them before? Have any in your collection?

1988 Topps Dinosaurs Attack!

I remember running across a poll on another blog to the sum of "Are you a sports fan first and then a card collector?", or "Card collector first who just happens to be a sports fan" ...or something like that.  I answered that I was a card collector first.  Yes, I like sports cards...hence the baseball theme of this blog.  I also like various non-sports card sets too.  I have lots of Marvel Comics sets from the 90's and 2000's plus some of the current stuff.  Topps seemed to be king of the non-sports scene in the 80's and while I may have bought several packs of Garbage Pail Kids and other things back in the day I haven't paid them a whole lot of attention since I got back into cards.

While browsing the selection of cards for this month's group break I ran across a box of 1988 Topps Dinosaurs Attack!.  I knew nothing of the set, but I took a chance since the box was uber cheap and I'm glad that I did.

I tried to share a few packs of this comical bloody set of cards via video, but the audio gave out early on the video.  In that video I mentioned how there was a story that unfolded card by card giving a reason if you will behind the card set's subject.  Now that all of the packs have been opened and sorted I wanted to share off the complete 55 card set (and all 12 stickers!).

Pulled directly from card #55 (synopsis) in the set:

Orbiting our world is the space laboratory Prometheus, where Dr. Elias Thorne is about to demonstrate his newest and most revolutionary invention:  the Time Scanner.  By projecting a modified particle beam to Earth, Thorne hopes to view - through an enormous wall of shimmering light - any area of Earth's past he chooses.  First on the agenda:  investigating the prehistoric era and learning why the great dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago.  When this experiment goes awry, the Time Scanner becomes a "time tilter".  All living creatures from the Devonian Period to the Late Cretaceous are suddenly, savagely swept through time into the 20th Century.  The world trembles as dinosaurs and other prehistoric monsters invade familiar surroundings, setting cities ablaze and devouring millions of hysterical human beings.  Meanwhile, Thorne and his associates on Prometheus work feverishly to correct their cataclysmic mistake.  They finally succeed...and the sudden "yank" of this time reversal literally shreds the reptilian invaders into bloodied pulp and bone.  Despite unprecedented losses and mass destruction, our civilization recovers.

Ok, you still with me?  Ready to see the story in card form?  Yeah?  Me too!

I miss non-sports sets like this.  Having a good look at a lot of these cards it's easy to say something like this could never be sold these days.  We're too "PC" today for something like this.  Perhaps this is a reason I enjoy this set so much.  Yes it's goofy, but it appeals to the sci-fi / horror movie fan inside me.

For anyone interested I do have one full master set available for trade or sale.  I also have an extra set of just the stickers.  I'm only one card (#55) from having a full 3rd set.

Video Pack Break - 1988 Topps Dinosaurs Attack!

Got a quick treat for everyone today.  While purchasing my boxes for this month's impromptu group break (which by the way are some teams left!) I grabbed a box of 1988 Topps Dinosaurs Attack!  I knew nothing about the set, but I like non-sports trading cards and a lot of the 70's and 80's Topps non-sports stuff can be entertaining...depending on your tastes.  Being a huge horror movie fan I found these cartoonish graphic cards appealing from what little info I could find so I grabbed a box to see what they were all about.  Let me tell you I'm oh so glad I did!  Take a look...

I can't wait to put the set together and put them in pages.  I want to see how the whole story unfolds.  I'll make sure to share the set once I've put it all together.  That's it for now.  The group break will be starting soon so if you've been delaying grabbing a team for 5 bucks now is the time!

** EDIT **  Sorry about the audio failing.  I'm not sure what went wrong.  Still trying to figure out this new webcam.  If anyone really wants me to reshoot the video so they can hear my witty commentary just let me know!

Trade List - Comic, Wrestling & Non-Sports

I'm slowly working on expanding this section of non-sports cards.  If you desire images of any of these cards just let me know.  There are a few sets I'm working on and those missing cards will be located on my want listMy non-sports interests include wrestling (WCW, WWE & TNA), Marvel Comics and anything Transformers related.
