Box Break: 2019 Topps Gypsy Queen

Several months ago when Topps released 2019 Gypsy Queen, I found myself with enough eBay sells to afford a hobby box from my LCS, Grand Slam Cards and Comics. However due to work and well, life in general I haven't been able to sit down and really break down the box. I've been off all week for vacation and I'm trying to make the most out of these last few days so I grabbed the box, a new binder and some Ultra Pro pages and went to work.

While I did share the highlights on Twitter the night I opened the box, I still like to do these Box Break type posts. Gypsy Queen is a set I look forward to every year and build yearly asd well. This year's design is one of the best since the set's inception in my opinion. The colors really pop and look nice in hand. If I have one critique it's that the card number font size is way too small for my old eyes. I'm sure if you're over 40 like me you've noticed this too! Other than that, it's a beautiful set and one I look to put more of a dent in this summer.

As a Braves fan of course I was hoping I'd hit some of my guys and some of the first Braves pulled were Johan Camargo and Kyle Wright. Camargo was relegated to being a utility player and pinch hitter with the signing before the season of Josh Donaldson, but he has so very few cards that I was happy to see he was included in the set none the less. Wright had a few opportunities early in the season to show his stuff and looked mostly good. Perhaps he'll be recalled in September?

I also ended up pulling base cards of Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Ronald Acuna Jr, Ender Inciarte and Sean Newcomb of the Braves.

I have a love/hate relationship with SPs being part of the base set. I love pulling them, but I hate how difficult it makes completing the set. By now you'd think I'd be use to this practice in Gypsy Queen since Topps does this every year. My hobby box yielded one lone SP, but at least it was a good one in Jackie Robinson. Now to find the other 19 SPs...

I really don't care for the various parallels in GQ, such as this GQ Logo Swap of Met's pitcher Zack Wheeler.

The Missing Nameplate parallels don't do anything for my neither. Who thinks up this stuff? The Wheeler from above and these two parallels are available for trade by the way.

The colored parallels, like this blue version of Joe Panik look good in hand. The card fronts are already colorful and the colored border just adds a little extra flair.

The red parallels were 1:563 packs so I beat the odds with this box. Numbered to just 10, I would've thought I'd found a trading partner by now. Then again, I guess I haven't "shopped" this card around much either. The red looks nice, but I think the blue parallels blend in better with the other colors used.

I forgot to photo the Fortune Teller inserts before I put the cards in pages earlier today, but I ended up with 4...the other was from a blaster. These are annoying in 9 pocket pages, but I like the idea behind the theme so I keep on collecting them.

The Tarot of the Diamond inserts from 2018 were nicely done and were a lot of fun. This year's version is more of the same, but with more color. Ended up with 3 from the hobby box and 1 from a blaster.

Each hobby box is supposed to yield two on card autos and I did pretty good. The Khris Davis auto is still available for trade (or sale?), but the Brad Keller has since been traded.

The GQ on card autos always look nice and this year is no different. I still don't understand why Topps insists to use sticker autos so much with other product when the annual GQ set shows they can pull off some beautiful on card autos.

The other bonus of buying a hobby box is the inclusion of a box topper pack. This time I pulled three Chrome cards. It wasn't long before I found a trading partner on Twitter and set them off to their new home. Beautiful cards...reminds me that I still need to track down at least the Freddie Freeman card in this set.

I ended up with 179 base cards (17 dupes), 1 SP, 1 GQ Logo Swap, 2 Missing Nameplate, 1 Blue, 1 Red, 4 Fortune Teller and 3 Tarot of the Diamond.

I finally got a Want List (added it to my Trading Card Database profile too) made for this set as well as adding everything I'm not keeping to my Trade List. If you think we can help each other out please leave a comment or better yet hit me up on Twitter (@flywheels).

2018 Panini Donruss - Who Wants to Trade?

I know Panini's baseball card offerings aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I am enjoying most of what they are doing, especially with Donruss. While I prefer the base design of 2017 over 2018, I decided to make a run at completing the base set complete with all the annoying variations. Just by buying retail thus far I feel that I've done a good job so far. Below are the cards that I'm currently looking for at the time of this post.

Diamond Kings - 2, 7, 10, 11, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Want List

I posted on my Facebook page earlier today the contents of a few retail hanger packs on clearance I found at Walmart. As I was putting the cards in number order, I realized that I never made a want list for the set. For whatever reasons, I didn't buy much of 2017 GQ when it was at retail so I guess now it's time to play catch up.

I've already added and linked the list on the to my master want lists located on the right side bar. I'm hoping to find someone that can help me fill in these holes - whether it be via trade or selling me some commons for cheap. After all, the 2018 set is coming in about a month!

2016 & 2017 Topps Allen & Ginter Want Lists (Finally)

To say I've been a little behind in getting myself organized is an understatement. I've got several sets that I'm building that I don't have active want lists for. Over the past few weekends I bought a new 4 inch binder and some pages and got to work on putting my 2016 A&G and 2017 A&G organized and in pages. This evening I took some time to finally get actual want lists prepared. I'm hoping to trade of course, but I still have more work to do in getting my doubles and other new cards I have listed on my trade list.

If you have lots of base cards and or inserts from last year or this year's Allen & Ginter set and you're up to trading, drop me a line and we'll see if we can work something out.

2017 Panini Donruss Want List

I'm trying to play catch up this evening while I'm watching the Braves/Blue Jays game...oh no, Freddie Freeman was hit on the left hand and had to leave the game!

Like I was saying, I finally got my 2017 Donruss cards in order so I could tell what I was missing. I wasn't originally intending on building the set, but after buying a few retail rack packs I really liked what I was seeing. If it weren't for the short printed Diamond Kings and Rated Rookies, I'd just about be done with the base set. There are a few photo variations that would be nice to have, but if I don't get all of those I'll be OK. I did manage to pull a few of them already.

I'm hoping to find a trading partner to help me fill in the holes so if you can help, let me know please. You can find my updated Want List here. I'll work on getting my 2017 Donruss doubles added to my trade list as soon as I can.

2017 Topps - Thoughts & Want List

Now that 2017 Topps has been out for a little while, I thought I'd finally sit down and collate all the retail packs I've bought and see how much of Series 1 I have and what I need. I also thought I'd share my initial thoughts of the set, it's design and some of the inserts.

I was going to buy a hobby box as I knew I wanted to build the set after seeing early pictures of the new design and such. However I never quite got around to that, instead I've settled for buying a few singles, several rack packs and a good many of those $9.99 hanger boxes. I just kept opening the stuff here and there and adding the new cards to my stack. Before long I had two decent size stacks so I decided now was as good as anytime to get them in order.

I don't know how everyone else collates a big stack of cards, but I first start off by making seperate stacks for 0-99, 100-199, 200-299, etc. then I go back to each stack and break it down by 10s. Finally taking each smaller stack and putting in numerical order. It takes awhile, but I've done it this way since I started collecting cards nearly 27 years ago.

I was a fan of the 2016 design, but I know a lot of fans could have done without the "smoke" look. The new design I like, however it does eat up a good bit of photo's real estate if you will. Topps did a great job capturing some great shots, as I'm sure many of you have seen by now. I particularly like the bright colored backs. I know they don't have career stats and for some that is a deal breaker, but the backs stand out and I like that. While I'm don't use Twitter as much as I do Facebook, I do appreciate the social media handles for the players listed on the backs.

The inserts this year are a mixed bag for me. I kinda want to build the 1987 set as I feel Topps did a great job with this set. I like the thicker, brown cardstock that was used for these. I also really like the 5 Tool insert set. It's got a great theme and overall design. Something different, kudos Topps. The other inserts are just 'meh'. The Award Winners, Father's Day, Mother's Day, Bowman Then & Now...they are bad, but I feel no desire whatsoever to build those sets. I'll keep any cards from these sets of players that I collect, but I can't see myself trying to track these down.

Here you'll find links to my new 2017 Topps Want List. I'm ready to jump back into the trade game so if you've got some commons you are looking to let go of, I hope you'll give my list a look to see if you can help. On the flip side, I've added all of my doubles as well as the inserts I'm not keeping to my Trade List.

2016 Topps Archives Want List

I used some of my birthday money to purchase a few rack packs and blasters to bolster up what little I had of Archives. This is a set I've toyed around with in the past, but never gave building the set the same attention that I do to the likes of Gypsy Queen or Allen & Ginter. However I've got a nice little start to the set and while I'm sure I'll pick up a few more packs I thought I'd post my want list just in case anyone wanted to try to work out a trade.

Let me say that seeing the 1991 design used as a retro design now makes me feel really old! It was a great design however and it's made opening packs and collating these cards that much more fun for me. I also like the fact that the set isn't filled with a bunch of inserts and I have a new Javy Lopez auto to chase!

2016 Topps - Let's Trade!

I know I'm a few weeks late to the party, but I had so much fun opening what I thought would be my only pack of 2016 Topps and well...here I am putting the finishing touches on my Want List and adding cards to my Trade List

For just buying retail hanger boxes and packs, I feel like I made a pretty good dent in Series 1 already. Decided to chase a few of the insert sets as well. I know there are others that are building this set so let's swap doubles. I don't even care if it's an even trade. I'm just itching to get back into cards now that life is settling down and the temps outside are starting to rise. Baseball is almost here and I'm ready! Are you?

2015 Gypsy Queen has landed

While stopping earlier today at our local Walmart to pick up a birthday gift for a party we were headed to, I checked out the pathetic excuse for a card section while my wife and daughters looked for a birthday card. I saw the pegs had been restocked, even eyed some new product (at least for this store - mainly 2015 Donruss value packs).

Up on the top shelf was one lone Gypsy Queen blaster. Then I noticed the hanger boxes. I grabbed one of each and began to compare the number of cards per box...the same. Then I looked over the odds of the inserts and what not and determined the hanger boxes to be the better deal. Plus each box contained 3 exclusive Pearl Framed Paper parallels.

I grabbed 3 of the hanger boxes and proceeded to check out. I wasn't able to open all of the boxes until I returned home from the party late this afternoon. I haven't even had time to get to my scanner, but I'm liking this year's GQ effort more than in the past. I like the design as it doesn't take up as much of the card front has compared to the last few years. Parallels are crazy, but this is Topps we are dealing with. I'll go after anything Freddie Freeman I can get my hands on, but the other Braves players are a little lower on the totem pole of what I'll be searching out.

Speaking of Freddie, check out his variation from the base set. Freddie is known for his hugs almost as much as he is known for his bat/fielding!

Glove Stories return for another year and will be a set I'm looking to complete. Pillars of the Community and Walk-Off Winners are two new full card sized insert sets that look nice. I'll be aiming to complete those too.

Last year I decided to focus on finishing off some of the sets I had already started on, but moving forward I would only try to build two sets - Gypsy Queen and Allen & Ginter. I'm glad I splurged today on these 3 hanger boxes as it's been fun sitting down with these cards and making my Want List. I won't be doing anything with most of the Minis and those Pearl Framed Paper parallels so check out my Trade List to see if I have anything you want.

2014 Topps Gypsy Queen and Allen & Ginter Want Lists posted

Yeah, yeah, I know I'm really late to the party, but better late than never. Right? During my hiatus so to speak, I didn't buy much of anything outside of a few retail blasters and rack packs. However I really like the GQ and A&G brands and I'd like to finish off at least the basic sets. I've added the SPs, inserts and relics I'd like too, but for now I'm focusing on the base set of each brand.

I've also added a few cards up for trade from both series too. I doubt anyone can use them, but just in case make sure to check those lists. I've got a good many Mini cards. I'm still working on my backlog of what I have left to trade, so I'm only entertaining trades / purchases right now involving these 2 sets.

Long Overdue - 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter Want List

I can't believe it's the 20th of December and I'm just now collating my lone hobby box I bought of 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter and creating my want list!  I do have to admit looking at all of these cards and figuring out what I'm missing in both the base set and in the various inserts, it has me a little excited about trying to fill in some of these holes.

I'm sure most of my fellow card bloggers have long since finished their collection of A&G, or at least have put a sizeable dent into their want lists, but if you are looking for a trading partner or have a bunch of commons to trade I ask that you keep me in mind.

As for my want list, here is a direct link.

What little I have left from my box to trade (includes lots of minis and all 3 relics) can be found here.

Working on a few football sets

The NFL playoffs got me motivated to getting a few football sets collated and in pages.  One of the sets has only been sitting in a stack for 2 years just waiting for some attention!  If you happen to have any commons from 2010 or 2012 Topps Prime football please let me know.  I'm not worried about parallels or inserts, just the base cards to fill in the holes in my set.

2012 Panini Cooperstown Want List

I mentioned last week or so ago that I was thinking about tackling the 150 card base set of Panini's new Cooperstown baseball set.  I finally sat down long enough to collate the handful of packs that I had and made a list of what I lack.  I also listed several insert sets on the want list as well, but those aren't a high priority at the moment (may never be if I'm honest).  So if you have any extras you want to get rid of please let me know.  At the moment I don't really have any doubles to offer in trade, but perhaps you'll see something else on my trade lists (baseball / autos, relics & more) that catch your eye.

2012 Topps Sticker Collection Want List

Just in time for Opening Day I've finally compiled my want list for the 2012 Topps Sticker Collection.  I'm still working on last year's set too, but I love the 2012 effort by Topps so much more.  I'll be listing my doubles very soon so if you want to work out a trade leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail.

2011 Topps Heritage Want List

I've finally gotten around to posting my 2011 Topps Heritage want list.  I feel like I've done pretty good considering I haven't bought a full box.  Most of my packs were either individual purchases or those 3 packs w/ the black bordered parallels.  I believe I've only bought one blaster as well.

While having all 500 cards would be really cool I'm not sure how active I'll be at chasing the SPs.  That said I would like to build the rest of the set.  I'll have my doubles listed in the baseball section of my trade bait category very soon.

Help me finish off these 2010 sets before 2011 product hits shelves!

In my excitement of 2011 Topps coming this week I really would like to finish off a few 2010 sets.  I have plenty to offer up in trade.  Look for my trade section in the side bar to the right.  Let me know if you can help me out!
