It All Starts Tonight

To say that last Saturday night, 10/23/21, was a good evening for the Braves' and their fans is an understatement. A huge understatement. While the Braves entered the post season as the winner of the NL East, they entered as an underdog with just 88 wins...the lowest amount of any of the post season teams. However the Braves were one of the hottest teams down the stretch and momentum means everything.

After taking out the Brewers in 4 games, the Braves took on the Los Angeles Dodgers...again. Two years in a row that these two teams met in the NLCS, however this time things were different. Thanks in part to the Dodgers having a hard fought Divisional series against the Giants, the Dodgers weren't 100% entering the series. Neither were the Braves. In July the team lost arguably one of their best players in Ronald Acuna, Jr. Combine that loss with Mike Soroka not even making it out of Spring Training. The Braves could have folded in July when Acuna went down, but they didn't. Alex Anthopolis pulled off some impressive deals at the trading deadline, including picking up an (at the time) injured Eddie Rosario for Pablo Sandoval...who was released a mere 12 hours after Cleveland acquired him!).

Rosario would go on to be the NLCS MVP as his explosive offensive performance helped propel the Braves past the Dodgers. Combine his efforts with that of Joc Petersen (Joctober!), Adam Duvall and Jorge Soler, all whom were also acquired at the trading deadline, and the Braves completely remade their outfield. It all magically came together in this post season...at least so far. While the Braves enjoyed home field advantage against the Dodgers in the NLCS, they will not have that advantage in the World Series against the Astros...however I'm not too worried. They split in Milwaukee to open up  the Post Season, but only won one of 3 games in LA. However they were undefeated at home...so I'm hoping for at least a split in Houston, then a sweep at home.

Yeah, while I'd like to see that happen, I don't really seeing it unfold like that. I think this series easily goes 6 or 7 games.

Regardless of what happens, I'm super happy for two guys in particular....Manager Brian Snitker and...

Freddie Freeman. A lot of was made about his status at the beginning of the year after the Braves failed to resign him in the off season. Freeman said he would not let that be a distraction and would not talk about contract negotiations during the season. He lived up to his words. While Freddie may not have been able to duplicate his MVP 2020 season, to see the pure joy on his face as the he caught the final out of the NLCS. Freddie has toiled through a lot of tough seasons and it's fantastic that he's being reward with a trip to the game's largest stage.

While making it this far has been a long time dream come true, I don't want to be one of those fans that just satisfied with making it this far. I believe this is the Braves' year. It's their time. No offense to the Dusty Baker and the Astros, but 2021 will be the year of the Bravos.

To keep the post card related, Topps surprised me yesterday when they released 12 cards highlighting the positions between the Braves and Astros. In a year where I've only missed picking up one 2021 Topps Now Braves card, the Braves' success in the playoffs this year is getting expensive! However I don't know when the Braves will be back on this stage this gobbled up these 12 cards did I do. It'll be fun looking back on this season and these cards will help. Of course I hope the last few cards I put in my Topps Now binder are cards of the team celebrating winning the World Series, it's been a great ride.

Box Break: 2021 Topps WWE Chrome (Hobby)

First off let me apologize for the lack luster photo quality...I ripped this box while working from home on the couch while I had WWE Crown Jewel playing in the background.

The much anticipated WWE Topps Chrome set is finally out and boy does it not disappoint. Back for it's second year, the hobby box configuration is 24 packs with 4 cards per pack. Refractors once again all 1:1 packs with on card autograph cards falling two per box.

The design is pretty simple overall. I'm glad Topps went with a "less is more" type approach...not that 2020's design was bad. Where I believe this set shines is the photo selection of the wrestlers. There were some really bad photos last year (see Peyton Royce for instance), however this year it's much better.

The above images are a sample of the one per pack Refractors pulled from the box. While it's odd seeing cards of talent that are no longer with the promotion, I do like the overall checklist. Once again, wrestlers from the different brands, Raw, Smackdown and NXT are represented.

If you like to chase the rainbow the you'll be happy to hear that a smattering of colored Refractor parallels exist, such as this Aqua Refractor numbered to 150.

Image Variations make their return again and feature the Refractor finish. I actually pulled 4 of these variations, though the one of Erik (Viking Raiders) eluded my attention when I was ripping and sorting.

Cruiserweight Greats I read was a retail exclusive insert set, yet here I pulled an Angel Garza. I like the theme, but I hate that the set is 10 cards. When will card companies wise up and start making sets in odd numbers like 9 or 18 so they fit better into 9 pocket pages?!

5 Timers Club has a good theme in which it features wrestlers that have held a title 5 times or more. The back of the card features a small write up of the title/belt that was held on multiple occasions.

The In Your House die-cut inserts are probably my favorite. Parallels exist as well, though I wish the /99 Green version I pulled was the regular base version as I'm chasing the set and one colored card will trigger my OCD!

The main draw for most I imagine is the fact that two on card autos are guaranteed in each box. I happened to get two autos from the base set, but there are also autos of the 5 Timers Club. Like with most of the inserts, colored parallels exist. This Green parallel of Drew McIntyre is numbered 72/99. The base autos are numbered out of /199, with this Mustafa Ali being 163/199.

Topps has done a great job with this product. I hate that it was delayed as many times as it was, but delays are just something that we've all come to expect with the current landscape of the world what it is. Boxes are still hovering around $100/box which considering what Chrome baseball is going for, this is a steal! Like with last year, I hope to build both the base and Refractor sets. I uploaded my wants and needs to TCDB.com earlier today hoping to eventually find some trading partners.

Group Break Recaps - September 2021

This has been a busy summer. Shortly after school let out for the COVID shortened summer, my wife and I decided to sell our home and move. Goodbye to subdivision/HOA living, something we've wanted to do for awhile, but never pulled the trigger. We called up Offer Pad to get a cash offer on our home and off we were running.

As you may know, the real estate market this year has been crazy. The Carolina Panthers (NFL) broke ground on their new training facility complex just up the road from our home so combined with the hot market, I think we made a good decision when we did to sell and move.

We got lucky I feel like with the house we ended up buying. We moved south about a half hour further into SC, buying a larger home on 2 acres of land. No more subdivision, no more HOA, no more annoying neighbors. So far, it's been fantastic. As a bonus, I was given the finished two car garage for all of my stuff. While I'm still in the process of getting the room set and finding a home for everything, I decided to fire up my Affordable Group Breaks at the beginning of September. While my collecting has certainly changed this year, particularly with the move, I still missed the community and hanging out Friday night with the guys...so I sought out some new product to go with the few boxes I still had in reserve.

I was able to grab one of these "Quick Pitch" boxes of 2021 Panini Prizm to kick things off again. While Panini's baseball products aren't everyone's cup of tea, I figured there would still be enough interest to give it a try. These boxes don't have the same "hit power" that then full fledge hobby boxes do, but it offered plenty of colored parallels and our hit was a surprise.

Silver Prizms

Blue Donut Prizms

Red Donut Circle Prizms

Green Donut Circle Prizms

Sixto Sanchez Blue Donut Circle Prizm auto

I don't remember what this auto was serially numbered to, but I believe it was rather low. I didn't really expect to pull an auto of a good player so this card of Sixto was a nice surprise. I think the Marlins initially went unclaimed and was picked up buy a regular buying up the cheap teams left over for a deal.

Towards the end of August I stumbled upon some retail football cards I so grabbed two hangers and two fat packs for a little Mini Break.

We pulled some decent cards, but no Trevor Lawrence RC for the Jags. After watching this past week's Sunday Night Football game with the Bucs vs. the Patriots, this Xtra Points parallel of Mac Jones's RC is looking a little better.

It had been awhile since I've opened a Skybox baseball product so I didn't hesitate in picking up this retail box of 1999 Skybox Premium.

These two inserts, Show Business and Soul of the Game are niiice and the checklist for these sets aren't half bad either. Love pulling 90's inserts of such hobby greats like Tony Gwynn and Big Mac himself.

The lower tiered insert set if you will, Live Bats, was represented by Juan Gonzalez and Normar Garciaparra. If these don't look like a 90's themed insert set, I don't know what would.

This football product puzzled me as I was never able to find a checklist. It's clearly labeled as 1996 Score Board NFL Phone Cards, but the phone cards inside were actually from the Classic Pro Line II Intense insert sets.

The phone cards came in various denominations with $1 being the most common and $10 being the tougher pull. Here are two examples of the $10 cards.

Even in 1996 there were several different parallels to chase, including these Proof and Test versions of the phone cards.

For the following week I had to slow the pace a bit thanks to my work schedule becoming a little more hectic. Only one box was offered this time, 2004 Fleer Tradition (retail).

I can't say this box was the most fun to rip, especially in a group break format, but we pulled a lot of cards for each team and that makes me happy for my customers. This Day in History inserts come in memorabilia versions and are much more appealing.

The week before we broke this hobby box of 2001 Topps Fusion, Shane Salmonson featured the same product as a part of his weekly Cheap Wax Wednesday series on Beckett.com. Let's see who's box fared better?

Fusion was a one and done product for Topps unfortunately. It was a "best of" of sorts as it featured multiple base card designs - Bowman's Best, Finest, Gallery, Gold Label and Stadium Club. Even though the box touts that one auto is guaranteed, as Shane pointed out in his article that just wasn't true. We however got lucky with this nice on card auto of Todd Helton AND a bat relic of Chipper Jones.

October is looking like beast of a month for me at work, but I do have a few boxes on hand that I plan on breaking starting Friday, 10/15/21. We'll get things kicked off with two breaks that will post here and in the Facebook group on Monday, 10/11/21. One will be a Pacific baseball product while the other will be another retail mini break that will feature 3 hanger boxes of 2021 Topps Chrome baseball. If I can find more between now and then, I'll up the box count.

Thank you again to everyone that has supported me with this fun little endeavor. 2021 has been a roller coaster for sure and I'm looking forward to busting more boxes before we close out the year. Catch everyone later, thanks for stopping by.
