Is this normal?

I don't buy many boxes of cards, especially hobby boxes in part my limited budget.  I've noticed however over the last week that many of the "wholesalers" on line have jacked the price of 2011 Topps hobby boxes up around $15.00 as the release date has gotten closer.

Granted Topps did announce the wrapper redemption for hobby wrappers.  Is it coincidence that the prices rose right after this announcement was made?  So if one were buying hobby boxes I guess it's better to get in early and place a pre-order versus waiting until it's released?

  1. Yeah it's pretty normal. I pre-ordered my 2009 boxes and 2010 series 1 for about a 15-20 difference than the price when they shipped, but didn't have the cash this year. I will probably not even buy Series 1 until later maybe much later.

  2. yeah it happened last year too. At least with the online retailers. I didn't see the price spike at the LCS as they had already ordered way too much and had to eventually drop the price to sell it all. And once the novelty of the MCG wore off you didn't really see any spike in Series 2 or Update. I'd expect the same this year. Plus it's the first go round, I'd expect this to come down in price eventually. Just think how cheap 2010 will be next month after all the MCG redemptions expire. I can't believe Blowout has jumbos for 121 right now. Crazy. Let's hope the product isn't littered with defects and quality issues this year.

  3. Another reason that they raise the price is so that they can include it in their weekend specials.

  4. I've noticed hobby box prices go up last week. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on two hobby boxes from 2010. By getting ready I mean saving a few bucks and then buying them through "Best Offers" on eBay. However, D&A took the "Best Offer" option off and jacked the price up $10-$20 bucks. I missed my chance I guess. Or… they are being jacked up only to run a "sale" on them soon.

  5. I have no idea about normalcy, but I do know it sucks.

  6. Yea I do think the prices spike a bit right before release, and the announcement of the wrapper redemption certainly didn't help... and on a totally unrelated note, there may be a package headed your way in the mail later this week!
